'Terrifying' waves smash sea defences and swamp roads on Anglesey | North Wales Live Skip to main content North Wales has been placed on alert for snow on ice – but parts of the region have been grappling with a different weather threat today. High tides combined with strong onshore winds combined to produce massive waves along coastlines on Anglesey. Flood alerts are also in place in Gwynedd and Conwy. Experiencing among the worst of the conditions was the village of Benllech in northeast Anglesey. On the seafront, giant waves punctured holes in a stone wall leaving debris scattered across Beach Road. Images and videos shared online caused a collective intake of breath. People described the towering waves as “terrifying” and the damage they caused as “unbelievable”. A local woman said: “Oh my goodness, I’ve never seen it that stormy there.” Anglesey Council closed the road and will be assessing the extent of the damage when the waves subside.
