AI Chatbots Mimic Human Personality Traits, New Study Finds
By Abdul Wasay ⏐ 1 day ago ⏐
2 min read Researchers have developed the first scientifically validated framework to measure and shape the “personality” of artificial intelligence chatbots, showing that modern AI systems can mimic human personality traits in consistent and predictable ways. A research team led by academics from the University of Cambridge in collaboration with industry experts tested 18 widely used large language models using assessment methods traditionally applied in human psychology. These tests measured traits such as openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and emotional stability, revealing that advanced AI systems can display stable personality like patterns across interactions. The study found that larger, instruction tuned models consistently demonstrated clearer and more human like personality profiles, while smaller models showed greater variability and inconsistency. Researchers also discovered that these personality traits can be shaped through carefully designed prompts, allowing developers or users to steer an AI’s tone, behavior, and style in predictable ways.
