Culture home A pub landlord is offering discounts on pints for customers who pay in cash in an attempt to combat rising bank charges on card transactions. Alan Davies, who runs The Trumpet Inn near Ledbury, Herefordshire, has lowered his prices by 5 per cent for cash payments. The 53-year-old said bank charges on card payments have risen so high that he could hire another member of staff for the same amount that it costs him, with charges adding up to roughly £5 for every £50 spent. Under the cash-only discount, a £6 pint will set punters back £5.70. Mr Davies has also extended the same discount to food. Pubs are facing unprecedented financial strain because of the Government’s increases in business rates, National Insurance employer contributions and the minimum wage, which have coincided with the end of pandemic-era VAT relief.
