An AIIMS Delhi neurologist has warned that pure vegetarians are naturally more prone to vitamin B12 deficiency because plants do not produce this nutrient. Vitamin B12 is essential for nerve health, red blood cell formation and DNA synthesis. Experts say vegetarians should rely on fortified foods, dairy, eggs and supplements to maintain adequate levels.
