Culture home It is being mooted in Westminster that the UK might soon follow Australia in banning under-16s from accessing social media platforms. The idea makes sense, given the evidence of the detrimental effect free access has had on everything from children’s mental health to their cognitive function. But I would like to see our country go further – and ban mobile phones altogether, for everyone. I recognise that this policy may not be an easy sell initially, and may seem particularly perverse to anyone reading this on a handheld device. Indeed, at first glance, it might appear more like a blue-sky idea from the Taliban or the Khmer Rouge than the progressive 21st-century UK. Still, I think there are many reasons why it not only makes sense, but might eventually help re-establish the currently tarnished Brand Britain as a global leader.
