Broadway Shows Eustis has served as the company's artistic director for more than two decades. July 22, 2026
By Logan Culwell-Block Oskar Eustis will step down from his position as artistic director of Off-Broadway's Public Theater as of July 31, 2028, his 70th birthday. The news was first reported by The New York Times, with the company itself making it public shortly thereafter. The move will end a 21-year tenure for Eustis at the head of the company, among the most influential in the American theatre industry. Eustis has also attracted criticism for his pay package, reported to be around $900,000 despite continued post-COVID financial difficulties for the company that led to several rounds of layoffs and the cancelling of the theatre's Under the Radar Festival of experimental theatre (the series has since gone independent and continues annually).
