David Brown was running late to have tea at his mother's house when he collided with 81-year-old pedestrian James Atkinson. The trumpet player had been walking to attend band practice at a nearby social club when he was left with "catastrophic" injuries, leading to his death in hospital two days later. With the man behind the wheel having driven away in the aftermath, he was then returned to the crash site by his mum, who later gave evidence against her son at trial.
